Day 7, Monday 30 July 2012 - Introduction about Feelings

Objective:
Introducing kids about feelings. Understanding what they feel at the time, and to say it in English. More than that, we want kids to recognize what they are feeling, and able to express what they feel in everyday life. And in the end, we want kids to understand what they feel, control their emotion, and to understand what other might feel as a cause to their action.

Teaching method:
Understanding feeling is very important in life. Many adults have problems expressing their feeling that leads to depression, and low self esteem.

It is, of course, tricky to do. But helping kids to name their feeling could help them to recognize what they feel, and how to overcome it. Later in life, we hope they grow to have empathy and be a person who care about other's feelings.

First, we will read them a story book, which relates to their daily activity and basic feelings that they may experience in daily life.
Then teacher will set examples, giving scenario to kids. For example:
- I woke up late, and didnt have time for breakfast. What do I feel?
- My cat ran away, and she hasn't show up until today. What do I feel?
- I would like to be left alone. What do I feel?
- I think I'm smarter and better than my friends. What do I feel?
Kids will be asked to show their expression and body language that represent the feelings mentioned by teacher.

Second, we will give broader example. This time more complex feelings, and let children understand that their action or words matter to others and will result to some feelings. For example:
- How do you feel when someone shares his toys with you? What might you do?
- How do you feel when someone does not share his toys? What might you do?
- How do you feel when someone say they like what you did to your hair. What might you do?
- How do you feel when someone pulls your hair and say bad thing about it. What might you do?
- How do you feel when someone make fun of you and calls you a name? What might you do?
We will try to remind the kids that their action sometimes effects other people around them. And how kindness and good heart can help other feels good about you and also themselves.

Third, we will put name of feelings in a jar. Ask each kids to take one, and he will do a pantomime demonstrating the feeling, while others will guess what feeling he is having.

Lastly, we will sing a song 'If you're happy and you know it', but we change the lyrics into more feeling:
If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands 2x. If you're happy and you know it, and your face will surely show it. If you're happy and you know it clap your hands.
If you're sad and you know it, cry it out (Booohhooo) 2x. If you're sad and you know it and your face will surely show it. If you're sad and you know it, cry it out (Booohhooo).
If you're angry and you know it, say 'Aaaarrrgggghh' 2x. If you're angry and you know it and your face will surely show it. If you're angry and you know it, say 'Aaaarrrgggghh'.

3. Name of feelings, to be put in a jar (You can copy and paste it in word, make them bigger, and to print them)

     HAPPY SAD ANGRY  WORRY  SCARED
       EMBARRASED   SHY    CALM     HURT    GLAD
    TIRED  BORED     EXCITED     PROUD
           JEALOUS    FRUSTRATED    RELAX

After Class Evaluation:
All kids understand the basic feelings, the facial expression that comes with it and knows what to do about it. They're very good in naming their feelings, mostly those which they experience everyday.
They are also very good in creating scenarios are example.
As expected, they are having difficulties naming feelings that are more complex, such as embarrased, frustrated, worry, hurt, glad, excited, calm, even proud.

When asked to tell stories related to feelings they have experienced, they are very open and honestly say whatever they feel. That's a good start, because they need to be able to express and communicate their feeling to others, as they grow up.

More improvement can be done for this class. We will arrange another session talking about feelings, in the future.
